Saturday, May 17; Stop Hermosa Beach Oil joined forces with Heal the Bay and The Surfrider Foundation to host a beach clean up and rally against drilling for oil and gas off shore in Hermosa Beach. The event was timed to immediately precede participation in the worldwide event known as Hands Across the Sand. After cleaning the beach, over 600 volunteers, comprised of friends, neighbors and community members from Hermosa and beyond were joined by Hermosa Beach Council Members Hany Fangary and Nanette Barragan, Hermosa Beach School Board Member Mary Campbell, State Senate Candidate Betsy Butler, Congressional hopeful Marianne Williamson and representatives from team Muratsuchi. The spirited rally against oil drilling off of our shores then joined hands to form a continuous line, south of the 10th Street Lifeguard Tower, to north of The Mermaid. The Hermosa Beach event was one of the largest gatherings of the day for the Worldwide Hands Across the Sand movement. Stop Hermosa Beach Oil would like to thank all of the organizations, the community and its members for their support in this pivotal event. A special thanks to John Wayne Miller who was on hand to photograph the event by helicopter, see above photo.
